A walk around Lake Bled, Bled, Slovenia September 12, 2019

Our second day at Lake Bled was spent walking around the lake in the morning and visiting a medieval town (recommended by our host) in the afternoon. We NEVER thought much about Slovenia EVER but are SO glad we visited after seeing that it is adjacent to Croatia.  Slovenia is what I remember Vermont being like in the 70s, beautiful, clean and untouched.  Except that it is actually STILL that way - totally natural with proud citizens who boast about their natural resources.  The roads are in amazing great shape and the only issue being the driver is not being able to soak in all the scenery while cruising around and sight seeing.  The lake in Bled is maximum about 30 feet deep and in a picturesque location surrounded by mountains and forests.  Medieval Bled Castle is on one side with a baroque church on the island in the middle of the lake.  We saw field trips of school children of varying ages going to the castle and to the Olympic center.  The World Rowing Championships in 1966, 1979, 1989 and 2011 were held on this lake and markers can be seen for Olympic training.

Below is the view from behind the AirBnB Jazz where we stayed.  A couple of goats keep the grass under control in this orchard.  From here the lake is a very short walk.

We started walking around the lake from the middle of Bled which is near our AirBnB.  The actual lake is about the size of the Lake Merritt estuary in Oakland.  The walk took much longer however because of stopping to photograph!

There are places designated for swimming - this was an old wooden No Swimming sign in a place where swimming was not recommended.

DW took this photo of boats for rent (no motor boats on this lake) - which were parked in a dock with cutouts for the bows.

We didn't know that Slovenia has a rowing team which has won several Olympic medals - their headquarters and training facility is here on Lake Bled, and one of the rowers owns the Spica Restaurant where we ate on our first night in Bled - the Olympic medals are prominently displayed in the dining room.

Another photo by DW - there were 4 horse carriages parked downtown - well utilized by tourists.

Danny on the lake path - with the church on the island in the background.

This is the money shot for the town of Bled!  And everywhere you look could be a postcard.

Fiinished our walk with sparkling water and the town specialty Bled Cream Cake!

Two little birds near our table waiting for crumbs!
